...Cafe noir is one of those New York institutions that will probably always be hip. From its corner on the western edge of Soho, noir has fed years' worth of artsy, fashionable, flash-bulb worthy New Yorkers. There is always a scene here. Favored in the fashion and entertainment industry, cafe noir attracts that casually fashionable/money type: a Hermes scarf worn casually with old jeans, the Duccati bike parked out front. cafe noir has also been a home base for expatriates, mostly from Morocco, Egypt, Spain, Brazil, and France. With this international pedigree, it's no wonder cafe noir has remained popular for so long: the people here are gorgeous, generally interesting, and well mannered (and that's just the wait staff).
The menu, however, isn't quite as gorgeous as the clientele. There are some standbys: the mussles are good (the fries are very tasty), and the pork chop and lamb chop are always tender and well seasoned. Seafood dishes, like sea bass, are underwhelming. They aren't bad; they're just not overwhelming good either. In short, the menu's just not that exciting.
This is not a place you come to for adventurous dining. It's a place that serves good renditions of standards in a shabby-chic/cosmopolitan atmosphere with good music (provided by eclectic DJs) and well-made drinks. The sangria could be a tad denser, in my opinion, but the cocktails are otherwise very well done. |
